We’ve been working with Steve Hewlett, Director at Hewlett Insurance Brokers, since the end of 2021. In 2023, they underwent a name change – something that required substantial administration and accounting support. Steve shares what led him to Nabarro Poole and how we’ve supported the organisation as they moved from startup to rapid growth.

We’re commercial insurance brokers based in Sale, working with businesses in a range of sectors to arrange their commercial insurance for them. After connecting with Nabarro Poole’s Director, Tyler Lappage, at a business networking event, we turned to them for support with the likes of management accounts, tax efficiency, general business planning, and more.

This proved particularly valuable in 2023. While I’ve been working in the insurance industry for over 25 years and set up on my own in 2019, it was decided that the business would change to its current name: Hewlett Insurance Brokers. While this sounds straightforward, it was far from it. Thankfully, we’ve had Nabarro Poole’s guidance as we’ve evolved…

Much-needed expertise

When Nabarro Poole came on board, the business’ accounts required proper attention. We needed help getting things moving in the right direction – specifically an expert to explain what was necessary and hand-hold us through the process while the business was in startup mode.

Nabarro Poole uses Xero. This directly connects to the business bank accounts, allowing for regular tracking and reporting, which has aided our decision making immensely. We’ve also benefited from profit and loss reports, Corporation Tax, personal tax returns, and business planning. Even just drawing on their expertise has been incredibly helpful – after they explained the importance of management accounts, we saw just how valuable regular reports are.


A change of name

When we made the decision to change the name of the business, it involved a large migration of clients, data, and insurance policies to the new company. It was quite a challenging period, as there was extensive administration and duplicate accounting work. While the previous limited company is now dormant, this still required attention from both myself and Nabarro Poole.

Tyler has provided me with a lot of guidance around accounts, and his advice during the transition period was superb. He showed me how to seamlessly move the business from one company name to another administratively and tax-efficiently – both while remaining compliant. There were so many factors I hadn’t considered. For example, ensuring HMRC was clear on the change and explaining to clients the rationale behind it.

Nabarro Poole are more than just accounting – they also give business management and support advice. They help me to understand what figures mean. And they’ve given the business the ability to plan for the future. We can now confidently consider things like recruitment knowing that the business is in the right position for it – up until now, we’ve relied on outsourcing. Tyler has shared his expertise on hiring, too, recommending the type of people we should be looking for to help the business grow and who will be a cultural fit.
